Schwarzer Kanals fabulous "diy-bikeworshop wagon" is taking a winter break.. but is determined to open its doors again next springtime wherever Schwarzerkanal may be!!
We are currently tidying-up and preparing the wagon for the move..and making plans for an even better, bigger bike workshop wagon on the new place *dreams!*
In the meantime Les lanternes rouges are looking for new hands to bring visions for the next incarnation of Schwarzerkanals immutable bike workshop!!

Give some love to your bike! Be it a touring-, road- or dutch bike, a slick fixie or a rusty shopper. At the bike workshop nearly all bike repairs can be undertaken. Most essentials are available, all tools are there and can be used by everyone, so let's get on with it! Support (emotional or technical, whatever you need in this moment) is provided by the bike collective Les Lanternes Rouges*.
Apart from a lot of (bike specific) tools there are boxes full of used parts which can be used by donation. And whoever's bike is already happy can gobble some vegan cake, coffee and tea. |
Les Lanternes Rouges is a group of people who'd had enough of commercial bikeshops, with their big boy big experts. There was a wish to open up a space where no questions are stupid and no previous knowledge is needed, where everyone can become an expert for their own bike - these were the basic thoughts when the project was set up two years ago.
It was also clear that vegan cake is pretty essential for a positive maintenance experience, which might be the reason that by now Les Lanternes Rouges is offering one of the best vegan cake buffets in town. |

The ideas turned into reality with a repair shop-wagon at the wagon-place "schwarzer Kanal" in Berlin Kreuzberg. At an open workshop people can work on their bikes once a week during the summer months. "Bike aid", a special project which equips refugees who are forced to live in refugee camps in Henningsdorf in the outskirts of Berlin with bikes, also has its homebase here.
For a second time, the diy workshop will move to "Gelegenheiten e.V." in Neukölln as a winter refuge. In addition to the open repair shop, themed workshops will be offered there.
And by the way - the Schwarzer Kanal DIY repair workshop operates according to the non-profit principle. The project is therefore dependent on donations to cover the costs of new tools and other materials.

Parellel to the DIY repair shop, ever since the bike collective began, there has been a plan to open up a shop. In the shop -like now - people will be able to work on their bikes independently. Added to that, a broader variety of workshops will be offered, and finally the vegan cake bakery will be taken to a brand new level. The planning is still in the initial phase (grand opening around summer 2009). This leaves a lot of space for creative ideas - possibly also from you?
Les Lanternes Rouges is a relatively small group of people and is looking for some reinforcement right now.
